The 40th anniversary of CLS marks more than a milestone. It tells the story of a company that has spent four decades turning space data into action for the planet. From its origins to its global expansion, CLS has built a unique path driven by science, innovation and purpose.
From the Origins to Global Expansion
The story begins in 1986. CLS was created by CNES to operate the Argos satellite system. The ambition was clear from the start. Use space data to better understand the Earth.
The early years defined the company’s DNA. Key milestones included:
Pioneering satellite-based wildlife tracking
Advancing space oceanography
Supporting explorers and saving lives at sea
Contributing to the foundations of sustainable fisheries
CLS gradually broadened its ambitions and entered a new phase of expansion in the early 2000s. The company moved beyond its initial scope and strengthened its international presence, with projects in regions such as Indonesia and Brazil. This period marked a clear diversification of its activities.
CLS applied its expertise to new global challenges, from tackling illegal fishing with radar satellite technology to supporting more sustainable fisheries through forecasting models. It also contributed to international efforts to better understand climate dynamics and expanded its capabilities to monitor major infrastructure projects from space. This evolution changed the company’s position
CLS was no longer just a technical operator. It had become a global player delivering space-based solutions for environmental and societal challenges.
A New Phase of Acceleration and Impact
From 2017 to today, CLS has entered a new chapter. One defined by acceleration, innovation and global reach.
The company has expanded through strategic acquisitions. It has strengthened its capabilities in connectivity, notably with Kinéis and Ground Control. At the same time, it has reinforced its role in environmental monitoring worldwide.
This new phase reflects a constant ambition. Put space-based intelligence at the service of the planet.
Celebrating the 40th Anniversary with Those Who Shape the Journey
This 40th anniversary was recently celebrated during a dedicated ceremony. An event that brought together key voices from across the CLS ecosystem.
The ceremony was opened and closed by President Stephanie Limouzin. Clients and partners shared their perspectives and experiences, highlighting the real-world impact of CLS solutions.
Among the speakers were representatives from CNES, scientific institutions, infrastructure projects, and regional authorities. Explorers, researchers, and industry leaders also took part in the discussions.
And who better than our clients to speak about our impact?
Un agradecimiento especial a quienes compartieron sus perspectivas y experiencias:
